Program Description

Kieser University's Associate of Science degree in Surgical Technology imparts students with the technical ability; knowledge and skills required for entry-level employment as a valuable part of a healthcare team, within hospital or surgical center operating rooms. Detailed instruction in the fundamentals of healthcare, surgical instrumentation, anatomy, physiology, medical language and pharmacology shall be received by the students. Graduates are well prepared for gainful employment as surgical technologists.

Program Objectives

To meet the needs of Kieser University's mission and objectives, there are many objectives that have been specially formed.

  • Incorporate the surgical technology knowledge base in cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains; display skills following established criteria, protocols and objectives in the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.
  • Operate safely, effectively and efficiently and show ethical behavior in a surgical technologist role.
  • Utilize basic scientific principles related to anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology for safe transfer, positioning, prepping and draping of surgical patients.
  • Explain actions and uses of anesthetic and pharmacological agents in the care of surgical patients
  • Employ knowledge of interpersonal skills and communications relative to procedures and protocols from a surgical technologist's perspective when working with patients, patients' significant others, colleagues and other members of a health care team, as well as other members of the community.
  • Utilize principles of asepsis in an operating room setting.
  • Demonstrate proper use and care of basic and specialty instruments and supplies .

Prerequisite for Major Courses

  • You must provide proof of high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • You must have successfully completed the entrance examination.
  • You must show a statement of good health signed by the student, as well as pass a background check and drug screening in some instances.
  • Prove that you achieved the successful completion of BSC2085C, Human Anatomy and Physiology I.
  • Prove that you achieved the successful completion of BSC2086C, Human Anatomy and Physiology II.

Program Outline

Students are required to successfully earn 75.0 credit hours, before they are awarded the Associate of Science in Surgical Technology Degree.

*An Associate of Science Degree is thought to be a terminal degree, thus it is non transferable.
